Curious to learn what’s it like to attend an indigo dyeing workshop
in a 150 year old farmhouse at a remote mountain Japanese village?
If yes, then read about Debra Valencia’s rewarding experience when she attended Bryan Whitehead’s indigo workshop in Fujino, Japan.
Debra begins describing her enchanting adventure with these words…
"Welcome to the Japanese Indigo Textile Workshop owned and operated by textile artist, Bryan Whitehead. I was lucky enough to accidentally find this workshop online and grab one of the remaining spots almost 10 months in advance. The photos on this page show you the general ambiance of the 150 year old farmhouse and indigo plantation in Fujino, Japan about 1 hour west of Tokyo.
The idyllic mountain village is gorgeous with surrounding mountains, tea plantations and hiking trails leading to views of Mt. Fuji. It was almost like stepping back in time 100 years."

About Bryan Whitehead (indigo dyeing craftsman and instructor)
Bryan resides in a 150 year old former silk production farmhouse in a small, mountain village just 1 hour outside of Tokyo. Every year he grows a crop of indigo and processes these plants into vat dye by strictly adhering to traditional Japanese processing methods. With the resulting indigo, he dyes cotton and silk fabrics. It is here in this bucolic, serene atmosphere where Bryan holds classes and workshops on textiles dyeing following the time-honored methods of traditional Japanese dye craftsmen. Bryan also breeds silk moths. He gathers the mature cocoons and reels their silk fibers into threads and subsequently colors the silks with natural dyes. He ultimately weaves the threads into stunning fabric lengths on traditional Japanese looms. Website
