Comments Kara-shishi

Shishi lions-dogs are found as pairs at Buddhist shrines & temples. They are guardians of holy places with magical powers to repel evil.

The open mouth,"kara-shishi", as portrayed on this textile, scares away evil spirits.

And the closed mount shishi keeps the good spirits from departing.
