Condition Overall very good condition. The horsehair fringe on the back has been deliberately cut out, perhaps for style or to accommodate wearer's own hair. But, actual reason unknown. See 8th photo.
Comment Horsehair and strands of hemp (or another bast fiber) hand woven together to form the hat shape.

The hat has a homespun cotton indigo lining and straps (look original). See 7th photo

From Aomori Prefecture, Northern Japan, a well known historic horse breeding region. Horses from this region favored by samurai for their strength and endurance.
